A RM 9.8 million package of funding is now available for students from Malaysia to pursue Master Courses in Europe for the period 2005/6-2006/7.  This is made possible through the MALAYSIA WINDOW of the EU ERASMUS MUNDUS Programme.

ERASMUS MUNDUS (EM) is a programme set up by the European Commission with the aim to promote European higher education and intercultural understanding with third countries. It encourages mobility of graduate students from non-EU countries, including Malaysia, to the EU. The programme runs for a period of 5 year (from 2004-2008) with a total worldwide budget of 230 million Euros.

There are four concrete actions within the general Erasmus Mundus Programme. Action 2, which focuses on scholarships, is the most relevant for Malaysian students. It provides an opportunity for highly qualified individuals from third-countries to pursue the Erasmus Mundus Master Courses in Europe. The scholarship gives students the chance to study in the EU for a period from 1 to 2 years.

The general Erasmus Mundus Programme supports the setting-up of ad-hoc Masters Courses by consortia of EU-based universities. These Masters are set by groups of 3 or more institutions from different EU Member States. Students from third countries taking these courses receive a joint, double or multiple degrees recognized by all universities participating in the consortium.

In addition to the general Erasmus Mundus scheme, a specific MALAYSIA WINDOW became operational in 2004/2005. The Window consists of additional 9.8 million MYR set aside specifically for students from Malaysia for the period 2005/2006 – 2006/2007. Currently, 23 Malaysian students have already been selected under the Malaysian Window to receive scholarships. It is expected that for the next selection (February 2006) there will be up to 50 more scholarships available for Malaysian students. This will allow them to take advantage of an in-depth international experience as well as an opportunity to immerse themselves in European culture.

At present there are 36 Master courses involving over 100 EU-based universities. It is expected that up to 100 master courses will be eventually set up by 2008. Students have to apply directly to any of the selected Masters Consortia and be accepted by them to receive the scholarship. Interested candidates shall contact by e-mail the focal point identified for each consortium (to be found on the EM website). The student scholarship is €21,000 (98,000 MYR) for one year and €42,000 (196,000 MYR) for two years.

Malaysian students are encouraged to apply to the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Programme.
