Laying the Foundation for Generation Y Posted: 30 March 2010; Category: Campus

Generation Y is said to be reared on rapid-fire Internet connections and cheap airline tickets and an array of options their parents or older siblings did not have. The challenge in bringing up Gen Y, according to some experts, is in preparing them for a society and economy in which they will be expected to be self-directed learners, able and motivated to keep learning over a lifetime.

At INTI International College Penang (IICP), a holistic approach to education, complementary to the needs of Gen Y is practised. This approach distinguishes itself from other forms of education by its goals, its attention to experiential learning and the significance that it places on relationships and primary human values.

Students are coached by dedicated lecturers and mentors to develop soft skills and learn how to demonstrate strong leadership skills, confidence, cultural sensitivity and the ability to analyse and strategise, in addition to being adaptable, independent, decisive and resourceful. The academic team takes on the responsibility not only to teach but also mentor and encourage students to be analytical and creative in thinking, and bold in taking on new challenges and responsibilities.

IICP promotes a wide range of on-campus activities, field trips, leadership camps, community projects, and other activities to provide students with opportunities to initiate new ideas, network with their peers, and hone their communication, decision-making and leadership skills – to mould them into becoming versatile and self-assured individuals.

“We students are encouraged to not only do well in our studies, but also to be involved in extra-curricular activities to gain other skills and experience,” said Kuah Jia Ying, a student of the Cambridge A-level programme.

Kuah, who scored 12A+s  in her SPM examination was among the 67 IICP students who received cash and certificates of excellence recently at a special awards presentation ceremony for outstanding 2009 SPM Examination candidates currently studying at the College.

Eight students scored 12As with 2 of them achieving 12A+s, 11 students achieved 11As, 21 students scored 10As and another 26 students scored 9As. 36 (54%) of these high achievers are currently pursuing the Cambridge A-Level programme while another 15 students (22%) are enrolled in the New South Wales Higher School Certificate programme. The remaining 16 students are in the American Degree Transfer Program, TAFE Accounting, and Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering programme.

Carmen Chuah Ming Ke, a 12A+s scholar said, “To achieve success, I believe you have to have a perfect balance between studying and having fun – study when it is necessary and also have fun!”

“Study hard and play hard!” echoed Loh Yee Cing who achieved 12As. “I am enjoying college life at INTI as there are lots of student activities going on.”

High achievers at IICP are also eligible for a wide range of INTI scholarships. This year alone, the College has invested RM2 million in scholarships and awards for deserving school leavers who meet the criteria.

IICP is a member of the INTI Education Group, which in turn is a part of Laureate International Universities – the world’s largest private education network. Students considering IICP will not only benefit from the years of experience and strong track-record that INTI Education Group offers, but also gain from the global synergy and resources that Laureate provides. Laureate is present in over 20 countries, and serves more than 550,000 students globally.
