A Collaboration on Advanced Engineering Research Centre (AERC) Posted: 30 March 2010; Category: Campus

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) has collaborated with its UK academic partner, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) on technical support and expertise for its research centre, called the Advanced Engineering Research Centre (AERC).

The AERC is the first research centre established within the School of Technology of TAR College and aims to become a centre of excellence in Malaysia for innovation, teaching, research and application of advanced engineering concepts in the industry. It marks a significant step in the College’s drive towards developing a research-based culture to further enhance its strong ties and support with the industry.

Dr Tan Chik Heok in his speech at the launch event which marks the collaboration said: “… given SHU track record in industrial research, its experiences and research tools will help our faculty staff in resolving problems faced by industry partners.” SHU’s Systems Modeling and Integration Research Group (SMIRG) of Material and Engineering Research Institute is a well established research group that is internationally known for its consultancy work in computer stimulation and automation.

Professor Cliff Allan, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of SHU who was at the launch added that this new development will take the  TAR College-SHU partnership to a higher level  and  be a catalyst for developing further research links between SHU and TAR College.

At the initial stage, the AERC will establish the Advanced Manufacturing System facility, acquiring relevant software system and work with local companies on joint research projects. In addition to exploring possible funding for research projects, there will be initiation of the split PhD programmes, staff exchanges and the development of joint training programmes. Thus, providing more learning, teaching and research opportunities for the students and faculty which is part of TAR College’s passion and effort in providing holistic teaching and quality programmes.
