Flight to Top Spot for INTI’s Frisbee Team Posted: 15 April 2010; Category: Campus

A gentle flick of the wrist can make a Frisbee fly, due to the gyroscopic force generated. The art of creating and launching a Frisbee is something that a team of INTI University College (INTI-UC) civil engineering students had almost perfected, as they demonstrated their keen understanding of the inner workings of a Frisbee for maximum performance in the recent Intervarsity Concrete Frisbee Competition, to clinch first placing.

Ng Wen Kai, Ooi Jing Fu and Ching Wai Kin succeeded in the competition organised by Universiti Teknologi Petronas for civil engineering students. The trio proved their mettle against competitors from universities across Malaysia including Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Politeknik Kota Melaka.

“Preparation for the competition required a lot of research,” said Ng. “With this and the helpful guidance and support from INTI’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology, we got the right components to create our Frisbee.”

All entries for the competition were judged on their design, weight, distance travelled, accuracy in flight and durability. Participants also had to display their presentation skills.

“The competition gave us the opportunity to broaden our skills and knowledge in the field,” said Ooi. “We could apply what we had learned in class and also learn how contestants from other institutions applied their skills and knowledge in an effort to create the most effective Frisbee.”

Woon Kai Siong, Assistant Head of Civil Engineering programme at INTI-UC said that the students’ achievement speaks volumes of their capabilities. “They have proven their ability to apply technical and scientific knowledge learned in the classroom to create a practical object that has immense special appeal,” he said. “Their success also reflects our emphasis on creating well-rounded graduates, as they have combined theoretical knowledge of science and technology with a fun sport quite well.”

18 teams of undergraduate students participated in the competition, where Universiti Malaysia Sarawak took the second prize and Universiti Sains Malaysia was in third place.

INTI-UC is a member of the INTI Education Group, which in turn is a part of Laureate International Universities – the world’s largest private education network serving over 550,000 students globally.
