Y.Bhg. Datuk Prof. Mohd. Yusof Kasim

Deputy Director-General, Public Higher Education Management Sector
Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia

There are presently 20 public universities in Malaysia offering a myriad of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Our public higher education institutions aspire to produce world class graduates who have a high employability rating and the competence to drive a knowledge-based economy.

In its effort to improve the ranking of public universities, the ministry has allocated RM1.2 billion under the Ninth Malaysia Plan for the Skim Latihan Akademik IPTA (SLAI) which aims to enable local public universities to be more globally competitive by providing current lecturers the opportunity to pursue a PhD qualification. This policy will increase the number of academicians in public universities with a PhD qualification or its equivalent to 60% by the year 2010. The ministry is also engaging foreign lecturers and experts in its effort to meet international standards and build on areas of strength.

Another effort in making Malaysia a centre of educational excellence is the support given to universities to embark on research and development. Increasing research facilities strengthens Malaysia's ability to undertake research projects, accelerate the commercial application of innovative ideas, and retaining local knowledge and skills.

To increase the global outlook of public universities and their academic staff, international engagements including research collaborations with renowned international institutions will be intensified.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Challenger Concept for their role in helping to increase awareness on various courses offered by public universities in Malaysia and enabling students to make informed decisions before embarking on their course of study.

Thank You.
