Cheer for senior citizens

March 21, 2013 | Campus News

It was a delightful time of cheer, fun and interaction for Relau Rumah Charis residents when DISTED College students paid them a visit recently.

The community service sought to show love and care for the elderly while nurturing the spirit of caring culture in the students who are pursuing UK’s Staffordshire University business degree courses at the college.

Event organizing leader Kelly Ooi Siew May said: “We had tea with the old folks. Amidst serving them fried noodles, red bean soup and pandan cake, we enjoyed a good time of interaction with them.”

“From funds raised during a charity effort, we presented a RM900 donation to the home besides clothing and food items including rice, Milo and oats.

“As for entertainment, we engaged the senior citizens in a karaoke session and interactive games,” she said.

“We all had put in a lot of hard work to make the charity visit a reality and we found it very worthwhile and satisfying.

“What we did was a simple event but presented with tender loving care,” she added.

Her course mate Joanne Wan noted: “Spending time with the old folks was an uplifting experience where I saw life in a different perspective.”

“It was a learning experience in giving. We went there with a big heart and we returned with a bigger heart for the less fortunate in the community.”

Accompanying the students during the event were DISTED administration director and School of Business head Dr Liew Yueah Cin, and club advisor and School of Business programme coordinator Gwee Sai Ling.
