Broadening Career ProspectsJuly 23, 2013 | Campus News
Felda has held a 30% stake in Nilai University (Nilai U) since 2006 and has entrusted Nilai U as the higher institution of choice for its settlers’ children as well as staff. “It is a highly recommendable for Felda to improve the prospects for the new generation to achieve their highest potential through higher education,” says Datuk Dr Megat Burhainuddin Megat Abdul Rahman, Nilai U Vice-Chancellor and President. In his welcoming speech to the new arrivals, Dr Megat encouraged all Felda students to use this opportunity wisely and utilise all the facilities available on the campus.
The incoming batch of Felda scholars were those who had applied for the Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology programmes. Dr Megat assured the scholars and their parents that the need for nurses is always there as the population keeps on increasing. “Graduates from healthcare fields, particularly allied health professionals, are always in demand both from public and private sectors,” states Dr Megat emphatically. “There will be no shortage of job opportunities if the graduates are skilled, knowledgeable and qualified. They can choose to work at hospitals, clinics, laboratories and various healthcare providers in the country. In fact, some of our allied health professionals opt to venture abroad to develop their careers.”
Nuramilin Salehudin, who has just enrolled into Diploma in Nursing, is more than grateful to have been granted the chance of furthering her studies at Nilai U. “I am impressed with the green environment and the learning facilities provided for the students, especially for my programme,” smiles the petite 18-year-old from Felda Kechau, Pahang. “The high-fidelity patient simulator will help greatly with the understanding of healthcare methods and treatments.” Amilin’s parents, too, were excited as they see another child of theirs enter university. “I’ve always told her to carry herself well anywhere she goes especially now that she is away from the comforts of home. I want her to study diligently here for a brighter future,” says Amilin’s mother, Hajar Fatimah Moh Arshad.
The thrill of experiencing varsity life is shared by Mohamed Khairudin Ithnin from Felda Layang-layang, Johor. Khairudin admits to being torn between entering the working world and furthering his education. “After giving it serious thought, I understand I should not rush into the working world when I have the opportunity to enhance my knowledge,” says the 18-year-old who has enrolled in the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology programme. He is also confident that by having to use English daily with his interactions with local and international students will help him improve his language skills. “Knowledge is a vital weapon for a lucrative career. So I urge other Felda scholars to come join me as a Nilai U student!”
To date, more than 400 students from Felda has joined the Nilai U family in various programmes. Nilai U was established in 1997 and is rated Setara 5/Excellent by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
