Nottingham graduates employed within 6 months

“I am particularly proud of the high level of employability among graduates from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus – over 96 percent are employed within 6 months of graduation,” said Professor Christine Ennew, Provost and CEO of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) following the University’s graduation ceremony on July 6, citing data from the latest (2011) study of graduate destinations.

“Our success as a university stems from the success of our graduates many of whom hold key positions in leading organisations in Malaysia and internationally; it demonstrates that a Nottingham degree is recognised worldwide and is highly sought after by employers,” Professor Ennew said.

UNMC alumnus, Andre Khor said, “In my current role I am Finance Director for Shell companies in Indonesia – I was promoted to this role less than 10 years after graduation, having previously worked in the UK and Malaysia.

It is my privilege to be the first batch of undergraduates to join The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. I benefited from a UK-style education in an Asian setting, engaging with world class lecturers. I also had the opportunity to spend time at the UK campus and I believe that the quality of my education and the international perspective I gained at Nottingham has really helped to propel my career forward. And I’m honoured to be able to maintain my relationship with the University by serving as a member of the Industrial Advisory Board for the Business School.”

According to Dr. Douglas Tay, Operator Guidance Technology Engineer at Exxon Mobil and an alumnus of the university, “I would like to share a quote that I live by, by Jonathan Kozol - Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. It is all about risk management! Once you enter the workforce, start with doing simple tasks well. Slowly, you will see big battles becoming smaller.”

Honorary Graduates

At the ceremony, Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkilfli Abdul Razak and Teh Beng Choong were both conferred the honorary degrees. Professor Dzulkifli, Vice Chancellor of Albukhary International University who has also held numerous leadership positions in global education and science bodies including the World Health Organisation, and the International Association of Universities was conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science. Mr Teh Beng Choong is the, Chair and founder of the National Autism Society of Malaysia and is a keen advocate of education opportunities for autistic children. He received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law.

Vice Chancellor’s Achievement Award

At the ceremony, Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Nottingham presented the Vice Chancellor’s Achievement Award to graduates Sattyam Pillay Veerapen and Tai Weisham. Sattyam a graduate from Civil Engineering was the past Student Association (SA) President and welfare officer of the SA and he was conferred this award for his commitment and leadership skills in managing student engagement and also his role as a university student ambassador at official functions.

Tai who graduated from the University of Nottingham Business School was leader of AIESEC, a student society launched the FORWARD Campaign which provides literacy training and health education to Orang Asli community from a village located about 5 kilometers from the UNMC campus. Tai’s team also organised a visit for international AIESEC members to visit the community which resulted in the securing of funds for this project and committing by members to pay for house rentals of the villagers. Team members, Monil Tejani and Jayson Chia Jun-Kuen will also receive the awards at a separate ceremony in September.

757 students at UNMC were awarded with undergraduate degrees from The University of Nottingham at their Graduation Ceremony on July 6 hosted by Professor Karen Cox and Professor Christine Ennew.

The graduation ceremony was also attended by YM Tengku Tan Sri Datuk  Sri Ahmad Rithauddeen Tengku Ismail, Chairman of Board of University of Nottingham in Malaysia Sdn Bhd (UNIM); YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, Deputy Chairman and Group Managing Director of Boustead Holdings Sdn Bhd and Professor Sayed Azam Ali, CEO of Crops for the Future Research Centre.

The University is a world top 25 choice for employers according to the QS World University Rankings 2012.
