Preparatory course for those taking IELTS test at Curtin Sarawak

Miri – 7 August 2013 – Curtin Sarawak is proud to launch its IELTS Preparatory Course, a comprehensive course over three weekends that aims to prepare participants to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test at the university, which is an IELTS Associate and IELTS Test Centre in Miri.

The course is being facilitated by Curtin Consultancy Services (M) Sdn. Bhd., Curtin Sarawak’s consultancy arm, in collaboration with the Department of Language Studies and Humanities at its School of Continuing Studies.

According to Liew Mei Yin, Curtin Consultancy Services’ business development manager, the course would be of great benefit to working adults and school leavers who intend to take the internationally-recognised test for study and immigration purposes.

“The IELTS test is increasingly being used as an entry requirement by universities and other institutions of higher learning, and for professionals who want to study or practice in English-speaking countries,” said Liew.

She added that it is accepted by most Australian academic institutions, including Curtin and over 6,000 institutions worldwide, as proof of English language proficiency.

The course’s 30 hours of instruction focuses on the test format and question types, time management and instructions for the different sections of the test, reading and listening strategies for speedy comprehension, writing strategies to address the writing tasks, and appropriate oral responses for the speaking test.

As a result, the participants will not only receive an overview of the IELTS test, but also gain confidence in their speaking and listening skills; use practice tests, error correction and teacher feedback to identify areas for improvement, and learn techniques and tips to help do their best on the test.

The British Council Malaysia appointed Curtin Sarawak as an IELTS Associate following the signing of a partnership agreement last year. An IELTS Associate is an educational institution which registers candidates on behalf of the British Council and provides its venue to the British Council for delivering the IELTS test. Besides Miri, the other IELTS test centres in the region are in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Brunei.

The next IELTS Preparatory Course will be held on the weekends of 24 – 25 August, 31 August – 1 September and 7 – 8 September 2013 in preparation for the IELTS test on 12 September 2013. A subsequent course will be held on 23 – 24 November, 30 November – 1 December and 7 – 8 December 2013 for a 14 December 2013 test date.
