A Creative Cause: The One Academy Students helped children tell stories with creativity

September 23, 2013 | Campus News

In collaboration with StART Society, The One Academy students used their creativity for a good cause by designing the stage for StART Society’s 2-day musical performance. The concert was held in conjunction with UOB-StART “My Story” Art Exhibition.

The children’s art exhibition was held at The Circle, Publika, showcasing the top 50 artworks from its fine arts students whom have enrolled in the charitable academy’s art enrichment programme. The funds raised benefited some 300 students from 14 shelter homes who enjoyed the free art materials and art lessons taught by reputable art teachers.

Both art exhibition and musical performance was geared towards raising funds for the StART Society children’s art enrichment programme. The One Academy students contributed their crafty skills by designing the stage for the concert, with materials sponsored by Tang’s Art. Tang’s Art supplied an array of wrapping papers used for the stage design.

The One Academy degree students designed the stage under the guidance of their advertising industry lecturer, Alexdrina Chong. The art direction was planned ahead incorporating arts and crafts by the children of StART Society. Alexdrina, who is also a managing director of So+Co- a social mission design agency, guided her students to work towards designing for a cause.

According to Alexdrina, the idea was not only to use wrapping papers provided by Tang’s Art but to incorporate zero wastage of paper. “The One Academy design students used the stylish wrapping papers to design the stage. Any leftovers including the post-concert materials from the stage will be recycled for the children’s future use,” said Alexdrina.

She added, “It is not only about recycling it for future purpose, but it is also for the children, so that they will have plenty of art and craft supplies for their crafty projects!”

Besides being able to contribute to the creative community, this opportunity also serves as a chance for The One Academy students to showcase their hands on creative techniques, while making it possible for the children and inspiring them as well that they may emerge as future generations of creative talents.

In line with The One Academy’s out of the classroom learning experience, The One Academy students’ contribution to the community allows them to understand that creativity is beyond boundaries; creativity isn’t just limited to learning in school from lecturers, in fact it is a profound experience that allows an individual to move forward in self-development through self-expression in visual arts.
