TAR University College A Level Student Clinches the ASEAN Scholarship

October 10, 2013 | Campus News

TAR University College, formerly known as TAR College, has built a well-known reputation for its holistic education that has helped many students to reach their highest potential for more than four decades.  Today, the tradition of excellence continues to shine forth and this is clearly demonstrated in Yew Kuok Fung, an A Level student of the Centre for Pre-University Studies (‘CPUS’) at TAR University College who has achieved a tremendous feat, emerging as an ASEAN scholar. Yew Kuok Fung is the latest addition to the long line of ASEAN Scholars who have been educated at the Centre for Pre-University Studies, TAR University College.

This lad recently earned the ASEAN scholarship, as he did extremely well in the examinations and had performed equally well at the interview.  Scoring 4 ‘A*’s in the recent A Level June 2013 examination certainly helped him secure the chance for an interview.  Coupled with a good command of English and being active in co-curricular activities, Kuok Fung has a winning formula to clinch the scholarship.  With an impressive A Level results of 4 ‘A*’s, he had applied for the ASEAN scholarship which is offered by the Singapore Government to allow high-achieving students to pursue tertiary education in the island state.  As part of the selection process, an interview is required to gauge the applicant’s strength and the same went for Kuok Fung.  He advises that the key to success in any interview is to be confident, be natural and most importantly to be yourself.

Kuok Fung revelled in the conducive learning environment at TAR University College.  This young lad is quick to mention that the library discussion room and the hostel’s study room were his favourite places where he spent time going through his study materials and having discussions with his friends.  He also thinks that the lecturers at TAR University College are very approachable, dedicated and experienced.  “They go the extra mile in helping students in their studies, be it strong or weak students and they are experts in their fields of study, thus providing us with a solid foundation for the subject taught.”

Given that his inclination is towards quantitative and analytical matters, Kuok Fund aced in numerical subjects such as Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics in A Level.  He is now studying Mechanical Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and has aspirations to become a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist one day.  The reason for that stems from the fact that throughout his life, there have been many who had been kind to him and he believes that he should repay such kindness with good deeds.

His achievement is testament to the excellent pre-university education provided by CPUS at TAR University College. Ms Looi Li Chin, Head of CPUS, highlighted: “Our June 2013 A Level results registered a high overall pass percentage of 94% as well as high individual subject passes of 98.5% for Physics; 94.4% for Chemistry and Biology at 92.4%. 32% of students from this cohort achieved excellent results of AAB and above, qualifying them to apply to the top universities in the world. Year after year, we consistently produce top A Level high achievers whilst raising our pass percentage.  This speaks volumes for the commitment and standards of teaching in TAR University College”.  CPUS has an enviable track record of producing excellent A level high achievers and many have gained entry into some of the world’s top universities such as, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, Imperial College London, Cardiff University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, University of New South Wales, Australian National University, to name a few.
