The One Academy Students Learn Fashion from a Creative Perspective

February 24, 2014 | Campus News

The One Academy ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Fashion Design students are always in for a treat when fashion experts swing by for an inspiring sharing or two. Besides learning hands on techniques, the sharing sessions are meant to invoke students’ inward experience to nurture them not just as fashion designers but as artists.

Australian-born but London-based Fashion Photographer and Editor, Leigh Keily flew in to give The One Academy fashion students an inspiring sharing about fashion from a creative perspective. Leigh, who is also an educator in the UK, teaches students how to communicate their ideas through stories in photography, especially photo shoots for fashion magazines.

As a co-founder of style magazine PHOENIX, actively engage with state-of-the-art fashion projects also as the co-founder/editor of specialist men’s magazine JON and in photo shoot sessions as photography director of GEIST. Basically, The One Academy students were in for a treat to be able to learn from an artistic and informative professional like Leigh himself, to grasp the tools of the trade of fashion art direction.

When it came to sharing about photography knowledge, Leigh provided few tips on fashion photography, such as keeping the set’s lighting and deco simple and how to make a model warm outdoors despite the weather condition. The One Academy fashion design students also picked up another advice, according to Leigh it is a plus point for The One Academy students to know how to create a lovely ambiance to complement the model’s outfit and style. It doesn’t matter even if you are fashion student, or from any part of the creative field, it is still important to know how to turn it up a notch for that extra point.

The One Academy fashion design students also learned about shooting products, while Leigh included that it is important to create a suitable mood and lighting. He said “It doesn’t have to be a clean and perfect setting, because even an “accidental-art” mood works well too to help the product stand out.”

Although the sharing on photography was touch-base, however Leigh still emphasized on creative inspiration topics to make sure that The One Academy students are enlightened in the artistic perspective of photography and direction.

Other than that, Leigh shared an unconventional tip on how to break through creative boundaries. According to Leigh’s suggestion, The One Academy students can actually gain inspiration if they take some time to spend quality time with themselves by engaging in creative projects, sightseeing or just simple walks in the park would do too. “So, start sketching and start getting yourself involve in activities and not just sit in your room all day!” said Leigh.

It was certainly a unique learning experience for The One Academy’s aspiring fashion designers. As the speaker puts it, Fashion isn’t just about developing fashion sense and style coordination, but it is also about creating stories through a creative perspective; practically a mentality that is strongly supported by The One Academy.
