Championing a cleaner city

May 9, 2014 | Campus News

In support of the Penang state government’s drive for a better quality and healthier environment, a group of DISTED College hospitality students organized a street clean-up campaign recently, which also saw them raising funds for a charity organization.

The 28 hospitality students helped to clean up the streets in the heritage enclave of George Town covering China Street Ghaut to Victoria Street and from Beach Street to Church Street Ghaut and Masjid Kapitan Keling Road.

Joining them in the community service were 9 staff of the Penang Municipal Council.

“The clean-up campaign was in line with the state government’s efforts to promote a ‘Cleaner, Greener Penang’.

“Apart from clearing litter in the streets, we also attended to clogged drains,” said project leader Joanne Teoh Sue Fenn.

“Recyclable items were collected from shops around the areas and we received encouraging support from the shopkeepers.

“Proceeds from selling the recyclables were donated to Tzu Chi, a non-profit humanitarian organization that promotes community welfare,” she remarked.

Their lecturer Ravichandran Sellakannu said: “It was heartening to see the students initiating action on environmental cleanliness, which is tandem with the college’s Let’s Go Green campaign to mould environmentally responsible citizens.”

“They succeeded in securing the cooperation of the various segments in the community including business premise owners and local government officers in the cleanliness campaign,” he added.
