SPM results: Students should not go by merit alone

March 5, 2015 | Campus News

The recent SPM results show fewer students not achieving straight As for their SPM examinations. The SPM exams provide a foundation for students towards the future, either through a higher education pathway or by heading straight into the workforce. Most Malaysian students are looking at various courses they can pursue to achieve their dreams and goals.

Straight A students are naturally excited about the prospect of being accepted into a good university. But students who have average grades should not be discouraged as they can still chart their education pathway by pursuing a good degree programme at a reputable university. Not achieving your desired results in SPM is not the end of you educational aspirations. I would encourage students to think carefully about their skills and interests and to research the full range of options available. Look carefully at the different Universities and colleges and the range of courses they offer. School leavers should consider factors such as the reputation of a higher education institution, the subjects available, scholarships and opportunities for further study and employment at the end of their course. Comparing your interests and aspirations with the study options available is essential to making an informed choice.

The coming few weeks provide an excellent opportunity for students to visit education fairs and open days to get a feel of the campus, the academics and the overall study and living environment. The University of Nottingham for instance has an Open Day on March 14 at its campus in Semenyih, which provides the opportunity to find out more about the courses available, meet staff and other students and view the features of the campus including teaching rooms, laboratories, accommodation, sports and leisure facilities.

A good university education not only prepares students for their future careers, it helps them to develop as well-rounded individuals who can contribute more broadly to the economy and society. A British style education is distinctive with its focus on student centred learning, an integrated approach to developing soft skills and an emphasis on critical thinking, creativity and innovation. As a result, graduates of British University are highly employable and are able to access some of the best career opportunities available.
