Asia e University (AeU) recently organised a 'Student Research Seminar' for all their students in AeU main campus, Kuala Lumpur on 17 May 2015. The ceremony was officiated by AeU's Deputy President, Prof. Dr. Hairudin Harun. This educational and information research seminar was opened not only to AeU students but also the general public to share their research findings among the student community.

About 150 AeU students came from all over Malaysia such as Sabah, Sarawak, Penang and other states to attend the seminar. Overall, 28 papers were presented on that particular day. Among the participants, some presenters are from other higher learning institutions such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Selangor,(UNISEL), Nilai University, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College and Institut Islam Hadhari, Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia.

One of the presenters, Mr Chow Chee Keong, an engineer by profession with an MBA who hails from Penang, is a Master of Education (MEd) student from AeU. He is also the founder/owner of a pre-school.

Mr Chow presented his paper titled “A qualitative study on the teaching and learning of mathematics through socio dramatic play by 5-year old children in an authentic setting”. This research presented a unique opportunity for an in-depth study of how children behave under various play situations. Teaching of mathematics through play although well accepted and practiced in the West is not a common approach among early childhood institutions here in Malaysia. He attempted to show in his power point presentation how teacher-engineered socio-dramatic play is effective in promoting mathematical learning especially in the area of logical mathematical processing. With the support from parents and the resources available to him, he was able to set up a truly authentic setting for the research.

Another MEd student, Ms Kalavathy Raman in her research paper, “Engaging and enhancing the communicative ability of the academically challenged youth” presented by Ms Kalavathy Raman research on academically challenged children and study Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) vs traditional teaching and learning method to youth in order to boost youth self-esteem, thus to engage and enhance the communication ability
