myCAREER Handbook

September 28, 2015 | Editor's Desk

Start off with the right career with myCAREER Handbook

Have you been wondering what you should study at college or university? Do you know what career would be most suited for you? Did you know that choosing a career that fits your interest will motivate you to do better?

To help Form 5 students explore their career choice and study options after SPM, StudyMalaysia introduced the myCAREER Handbook in January 2015. This initiative has resulted in an encouraging response from students, parents and teachers alike and has led to the release of a second version in September 2015: myCAREER Handbook (Series 2): A 3-Step Guide.

The myCAREER Handbook aims to help secondary school students find out which careers could potentially suit their personality style and consequently, identify suitable courses to pursue. The handbook draws its content from various career-related resources and has been carefully written for students to use as a self-directed guide. Among the work activities found in the handbook are:

Step 1: ‘Learning about yourself’ which comprises four career survey activities

Step 2: ‘Knowing What Options are Out There’ which guides students on what factors to

consider when choosing an occupation and deciding on education options

Step 3: ‘Making a Decision’ which highlights how students should use the knowledge

they have uncovered in Steps 1 and 2 to ultimately make a decision

Besides helping students to find their career choice, this handbook also raises their awareness in many ways, for example:

  1. There are many career choices in world, possibly more than they ever imagined
  2. Occupations can be grouped into various career fields. The handbook helps them to have a better understanding of these career fields.
  3. Choosing a career that is suited to their personality style will give them a better likelihood of finding satisfaction in their job.

This handbook is distributed free at schools participating in career talks for Form 5 students conducted by StudyMalaysia.
