Grant Awards Presentation & Industry Talk By Canon Malaysia At KDU University College

SHAH ALAM, 28 Nov 2016 – It was a historical day for both KDU University College and Canon Malaysia as both parties established yet another collaboration in providing the Canon Seeding Fund Financial Support for education opportunity to four deserving KDU students here today at the Utropolis Glenmarie campus.

The four students are Ho Chee Yin, Bachelor of Communication (Hons); Sarah Claire – Marie Atkinson, Diploma in Culinary Arts; Teh Siew Chin, Bachelor of Business (Hons) with Law; and Viona Lim, Bachelor of Communication (Hons).

The awards presentation were attended and witnessed by KDU University College’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic, Associate Professor Dr. Hon Wei Min, and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration & Scholarship Chairman, Mr. Shanker Sathivellu, Canon Marketing Malaysia’s Director of Human Resources Division, Ms. Julia Cheah, together with KDU University College students.

The ceremony was officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hon, who also delivered the welcome remark. “This truly is a testament to both KDU and Canon Malaysia’s good work towards the goal of our collaborative commitment, as I believe all academic-industry collaboration is for the enhancement of teaching and learning experiences of students. And with KDU’s tagline being, “Hit the Ground Running”, I trust that this collaboration serves as another step in the right direction,” she said. The opening remark not only served as an appreciation towards Canon Malaysia’s generous offer to aid KDU students, but also to welcome more collaborative effort in the future.

Following the welcoming remark was a speech by Ms. Julia Cheah, who spoke about how education forms an important pillar in Canon’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) framework, and how its partnership with KDU marks its flagship initiative in this respect. “We are honoured to be able to give back to the society and the Canon Seeding Fund Financial Support made it possible for us to assist these students who will be the leaders of tomorrow,” she continued. On top of that, she encouraged all students to be relentless in an effort to keep improving themselves and lay the foundation for even greater achievements in the future.

Moving forward with the highlight of the event, the Canon Seeding Fund Awards Presentation, the 4 selected KDU students - Ho Chee Yin, Sarah Claire, Teh Siew Chin, and Viona Lim were awarded RM4,270 each by Ms. Julia Cheah, accompanied by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hon Wei Min and Mr. Shanker Sathivellu. The grand total of the fund presented was RM 17,080. Soon after, KDU and Canon exchanged gifts as tokens of appreciation that signifies a robust commitment between the two organisations in providing a better education for everyone.

The event also comprised of a career talk, a joined effort by the KDU Student & Alumni Centre (SAC) and was delivered by Ms. Julia Cheah. The talk, “Knowing and Understanding the Industry”, aimed to inspire students to strive adamantly in achieving their dreams and goals.

Ms. Julia Cheah shared her insightful experience in the real life working industry, which is ever challenging. She cautioned students to be realistic when they enter the workforce, advising that with the current market condition, jobs are a scarcity. The audience were glued to their seats as she shared several case studies which reflected the current trend of employment. Students were not only exposed to the actual reality of the challenges in the working industry, but they were also motivated to strive even harder to attain their objectives in life.

All in all, the event proved to be a good experience for the students, with both KDU and Canon looking forward to more collaborative ventures in the future.
