Meet the Winners of Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Young Artists Awards 2019!

The Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Young Artists Awards winners with The One Academy’s Founder & Principal, Tatsun Hoi.

The nationwide art competition organized by The One Academy that spanned over the past few months has come to a close on 20th July 2019 at The One Academy’s new campus in Petaling Jaya. The coveted Gold Award and prize of The One Academy scholarship worth RM80,000 as well as RM20,000 cash prize was won by Chee Hoe Yin from Selangor. Following that, the Silver Award winner Ng Yan Lei from Selangor and the Bronze Award winner Lim Hui Xin from Penang won scholarships worth RM60,000 and RM40,000 respectively as well as cash prize of RM1,000 each. The seven other Young Artists Awards winners each received RM25,000 worth of scholarship, RM1,000 prize money and certificates of excellence. A big congrats to Tan Yenxin and Lee Chi Xuan from Penang, Marcus Tan Guang Zhi and Ng Jing Han from Selangor, Low Kah Guan of Kedah, Tan Guan Yuan of Perak and Kua Wei Lun from Johor.

Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Young Artists Awards runs annually in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios, in conjunction with its school holiday release, which for this year is 'Toy Story 4'. This is in line with the theme of the competition for this year - 'Toys' Late Night Adventure at the Fun Fair'. This year, there were more than 3,000 Round 1 entries from 400 schools nationwide whereas Round 2 saw to over 1,500 participants. These hopeful young contenders hailing from the East of Malaysia - Sibu, Kuching, Miri, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau to the West - Ipoh, George Town, Batu Pahat, Johor Bahru and the Klang Valley were vying for the top spots.

The event was not all work as the family, friends and contestants who attended the ceremony got the opportunity to explore The One Academy’s new campus and its Digital Art and Creative Design Expo, a public exhibit displaying a variety of impressive works by students. The participants and parents were shown the multitude of promising career possibilities that the creative industry has to offer at the expo.

In an effort to recognise and appreciate the passion of art educators, the Distinguished Art Educator Awards was awarded to the art teachers who helped nurture the Top 10 Outstanding Young Artists winners. While the Gold Award winner is self-taught, the teacher of the Silver Award winner, Mr. Fok Kuk Foong, and the Bronze Award winner’s teacher, Mr. Cheng Yeow Chye both received a certificate of appreciation and cash prize of RM1,000. This year, the Malaysia Art Educator Lifetime Achievement Award went to Ms. Tan Ngee Kong from the Jit Sin Independent High School who has been teaching art for the past 27 years. This award was conferred to her as a symbol of gratitude for her unending dedication and contribution to art education.

The awards ceremony also celebrated 10 inspiring individuals who have taken the creative industry by storm since graduating from The One Academy. The Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Creative Youth Awards was awarded to Heng Thang Wei, Creative Director of Grey Malaysia; Kuan Sook Chiung, Senior Digital Media Design Lecturer at The One Academy; Cammy Aw Wan Zhing, Co-Founder of DOS Design Studio; Tan Sueh Li, Type & Graphic Designer and Founder of Huruf; Jose Francisco Canete Cua, Lead Concept Artist at Mocreative; Bryan Lee Swee Cheong, The One Academy’s Senior Art Lecturer; Estee Goh Soo Theng, Interior Designer at Quirk & Associates; Ryan Wong Kok Tak, CEO & Creative Director of Glow Production; Tsuqi Hoh Yoke Mei, Creative Director at Multimedia People – MMP Singapore and Nicholas Quek Way Wern, Character Animator at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).

To date, Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Young Artists Awards has given out more than RM16.8 million worth of scholarships to deserving talented individuals all over Malaysia. Currently in its 22nd year, this art competition brings out the best and most talented young artists and nurtures them to help lead them to success.
