HELP Business students win scholarships to the University of Queensland

Three HELP University students, Joy Kua Pei Xin, Soh Hui Yun and Crystal Lee Ji Lum, from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FBEA) have good reasons to be proud. They were the deserving recipients of the University of Queensland’s (UQ) scholarships awarded in July 2020 to outstanding business students from FBEA.

They will continue their final year of studies in July 2020 at UQ, a member of the Group of 8 universities in Australia, a coalition of leading universities in Australia. UQ is also one of the top 50 universities rated by the QS World University Rankings. Annually, UQ awards scholarships ranging from 25% to 100% to outstanding HELP students who have gained admission into the final year of their studies at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at UQ.

HELP is the only university in Malaysia to have a 2+1 credit transfer arrangement with UQ. This arrangement allows second year HELP Business students to enter the final year of their studies at UQ.

Pei Xin, who has completed her Bachelor of Business (Finance) Year 2 programme at HELP University will be pursuing the final year of the Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) programme UQ. She is an alumna of the Confucian Private Secondary School in Kuala Lumpur. She obtained a Certificate of Excellence for her performance in the Business Studies paper in the United Examination Certificate (UEC) exams, placing her among the top 10 out of 10,000 students.

Pei Xin has also served as a President/Editor of Confucian Private Secondary School’s Graduation Magazine (Chinese) in 2017 and the publication was shortlisted by Sin Chew Daily for being the best in the category of secondary school publication (Chinese category).

Pei Xin was awarded the HELP Scholarship (Distinction Award) in 2018 to study the Bachelor of Business (Finance) Year 1 programme at HELP. She has worked hard throughout to improve her level of English and attributed her good results to the patience shown to her by her lecturers.

Coming from a humble background, her father works as a cook, while her mother is a housewife, Pei Xin hopes to complete her studies as soon as possible so that she can look for a job so as to lessen the financial burden for her parents. Winning the UQ Scholarship will reduce the financial burden on her parents.

“Once I complete my UQ degree, I hope to pursue the Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) professional course as I want to become a Financial Advisor, “said Pei Xin, who is looking forward to studying at UQ.

Soh Hui Yun, who is an alumna of the Chinese High School in Batu Pahat, Johor, was awarded the HELP University Principal’s List Award in 2018 to pursue the Bachelor of Business (Finance). UQ has awarded her a scholarship to complete her Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) degree in Australia.

As to why Hui Yun chose to pursue a degree in Accounting and Finance at UQ, she simply put it, “I think Accounting plays an important role in the business world and I will always be assured of a job,” said Hui Yan.

Crystal Lee Ji Lum, an alumna of from SMK (P) Sri Aman, completed her SPM with 8As and chose to pursue the Bachelor of Business (Accounting) Year 1 programme at HELP as she received the HELP Scholarship (Distinction Award) in 2018.

Crystal was very active in many co-curricular activities at HELP. She was a committee member of the Business Students Committee and was also a Peer Tutor.

“Being a peer tutor simply means I offer psychological and academic support for many of the outstation students, it’s their first time away from home and they have many questions, so I take the time to run through and reply to their questions so that they will feel less homesick and more able to cope,” said Crystal.

Crystal looks forward to completing the final year of Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) programme at UQ and hopes to carve out a good career in the business world.

HELP’s FBEA programmes continues its long tradition of producing outstanding students, many of which are accepted into top Australian universities such as UQ, University of Melbourne, Australian National University, University of New South Wales, University of Western Australia, University of Adelaide, and many more.

Recently the faculty was awarded Premier Digital Tech University (PDTU) status by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), a recognition that HELP is one of Malaysia’s leading digital tech focused tertiary institutions. The Faculty also manages one of the largest Bloomberg Finance Labs in Malaysia, housed in BATIC, known as the Business Analytics Technology Innovation Centre, located at HELP’s Subang 2 campus.

FBEA is a comprehensive business, hospitality and tourism management school distinguished for the quality of its academic staff, the breadth and depth of its programmes, the recognition accorded by world-class universities, accreditation from professional bodies, and its close links with the industry. It was established in 1986 at the inception of HELP in the same year. At present, it is the largest academic faculty at HELP with more than 2,500 undergraduate students.

In its continuous efforts to equip its business graduates to be future proof, the faculty has just launched its newly minted Bachelor of Business Analytics (Honours) programme. Stephen Wu, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FBEA) shared his insight on the importance of this new programme.

“In an effort to prepare our graduates at the forefront of the digital economy, we launched the Bachelor of Business Analytics (Honours). This programme equips future graduates with the skills and capabilities to seize the limitless scope for new jobs and new ventures provided by IR4.0 and to gain an advantage over the competitors. Furthermore with the vast amount of data in an organisation, the organisation will require Business Analytics’ specialists to investigate the data for business insights, predict possible outcomes of business decision and to recommend innovative solutions to maximise ideal outcomes for the organisation,” said Stephen.

The Bachelor of Business Analytics (Hons) is a 3 years honours degree programme and the FBEA will be having the inaugural intake for this programme in August 2020.
