Deploying Intelligent Systems – Time to Close the Loop

October 4, 2023 | Campus News

Recent decades have seen a dramatic development of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Augmented Reality, Robotics, etc. Such technologies have the ability to fundamentally transform operational landscapes, revolutionizing processes, and creating new opportunities. From manufacturing and healthcare to finance and entertainment, all industries are embracing advanced technologies to stay competitive. Late adopters are seeing new competitors gaining market share faster than ever.

However, the true power of emerging technologies lies in the synergy created by the convergence of these technologies. As these technologies are becoming more mature, it's time to close the loop – integrate diverse technologies into intelligent systems that harness their collective potential. The convergence of transformative technologies yields intelligent systems that are capable of analysing vast amounts of data, making real-time decisions, and executing tasks accurately and efficiently even without human interference.

Despite the benefits of their revolutionary and disruptive potential, the adoption of intelligent systems continues to grow but at a slower pace than expected. Multiple surveys have reported talent shortage as a leading factor inhibiting the adoption of new technologies. The complexities inherent in integrating these technologies into the existing IT system require individuals who not only understand the technical details of the existing and advanced technologies but also possess the strategic plan to tailor their implementations to specific corporate requirements.

This is the key reason that led to the introduction of the Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) Industrial Intelligent Systems at UTAR. This programme is designed to nurture ICT professionals who are competent in supporting, developing, and deploying intelligent systems to tackle the challenges faced by modern industries. This programme not only provides the student with a solid IT foundation such as programming, networking, database and cybersecurity but also the core technologies needed to navigate the companies towards Industry 4.0. These include digitisation and data acquisition, data-driven decision-making, data visualisation, artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and migration strategies.

To successfully traverse the fast-evolving technology landscape, modern IT professionals need to possess a blend of technical proficiency and soft skills. As an effort to produce future-proof talents, the Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) Industrial Intelligent Systems is adopting a work-based learning mode. The students will spend their first two years in university and their final year in industry. During their time with our industry partners, they will be coached by professionals in their respective fields and learn in a real work environment. Through practical tasks and projects, students will gain hands-on experience and foster their problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. It offers a transformative opportunity for the students to pick up essential interpersonal and communication skills in professional settings.

Graduates from this programme can pursue an exciting range of career opportunities in IT and emerging job roles in a wide variety of industries. These include the system architect, system integrator, IT analyst, IT support engineer, IT project coordinator, digital transformation executive, data analyst and data strategist.
