EXPERIENCE A STEPPING STONE TO THE TOP FOR TAR UMT’S EY YTPY NATIONAL CHAMP

October 5, 2023 | Campus News

After a First Runner-up finish in a tax competition she participated in last year, Tan Hui Theng from Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) was motivated and even more determined to finish higher in the Ernst & Young Young Tax Professional of the Year (EY YTPY) 2023 Malaysia. This time, she succeeded in emerging as the winner after the results were announced on 8 September 2023.

Hui Theng, who is pursuing her Bachelor of Commerce (Hons), will now be representing Malaysia at the international finals and compete for the EY YTPY 2024 international title.

“Hearing my name called as the winner filled me with a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride. I am exceptionally thrilled with my achievement as I know how much hard work and efforts I have put into in order to have come this far,” said an elated Hui Theng.

Recalling her First Runner-up finish in the tax competition she participated in 2022, Hui Theng described it as a “huge milestone in my academic life”.

“Some might take it differently, but my accomplishments in that competition gave me renewed confidence in my strong presentation skills and knowledge in the field of taxation. I believe that confidence made me bolder in tackling bigger challenges like EY YTPY.

“Even though the competition was intense and the case studies were rather tricky, I was more adept in staying composed and focused in a competitive environment under high pressure thanks to past experiences, ultimately allowing me to perform at my best and win the title,” she added.

About her thoughts on representing Malaysia at the global stage, Hui Theng said: “It is an immense honour which fills me with a profound sense of pride and responsibility. However, I am more exhilarated by the opportunity to meet and learn from the brightest minds from all over the world, while showcasing what Malaysia has to offer.

“It will undoubtedly be a big challenge, but it comes with great benefits. The additional exposure will broaden my perspective in the field of taxation, its real- world applications, and comprehensive problem-solving methodologies – all which can be helpful for my future career aspirations,” she added.
