How To Prepare For SPM With One Week To Go - StudyMalaysia.com

With one week to go, it’s time to re-assess your strategy and maximise your time as you count down to the SPM exam. Read on to find out how you can improve your study effectiveness. In fact these steps can be followed throughout your preparation for the examination and not just when the exam is around the corner.

Study at intervals

Do not try to study from chapter one to the last chapter each time you want to do some revision. You might not have time to finish a full round of revision every time. Now is the time to review what you know and find out what you’re still unsure of. In fact with an efficient internet access you can do your revision anytime anywhere. Try out websites that offer revision notes and practice questions.

Revise what you know quickly and put in extra time for the topics that you don’t understand well.

Attempt past year papers

Trying our past year papers gives you the exposure to the actual style of examination questions. Doing past papers before the exam is a good way for you to gauge your exam preparedness. You can find out what topics you are weak at and do the necessary. You can also study what questions are regularly asked or repeated.

Familiarise yourself with the marking scheme

Knowing the marks allocated for each question and the weightage given to different sections of the exam paper can help you focus on what is important and earn you more marks.

Take breaks

Now is not the time to cram facts into your head. Taking more breaks in between studying sessions will be more effective in helping you retain what you have learnt. It is said that we tend to remember the first and last thing we study; so by making your studying sessions shorter and more in number, you will maximise the effectiveness of the study hours you have left. A good guide is taking a 10-minute break every 30-50 minutes of studying. Use this break to have a snack or engage in a physical activity. Try not to play video games or do anything that uses up your brain power.

Limit distractions

Distractions are everywhere but for this week and the rest of the SPM month, you need to get into the study mode! Consider leaving your phone in a different room when you study. Tell your family members what your study hours are and request that they do not interrupt you at that time. Take a break from social media and TV for the time being. You know best what your distractions are – take a positive step towards minimising them.

Take care of your body health

To make sure that your mind is in tip top condition, you’ll need to take care of your body too. More and more experts are recommending exercise to boost your brain’s performance – so what are you waiting for? Take a jog round your neighbourhood or play your favourite track and dance your stress away. Short bursts of cardio for 10-20 minutes will help improve your memory and energy levels. Eat well and stay away from food that your body is not used to. Hydrate! You’ve heard this before but we’ll say it again – drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Prep yourself the night before

There are several things you need to do the night before you sit for an exam. First, check your SPM exam timetable and make sure you’ve got the subject paper, date and time right. Next, review the subject you’re sitting for the next day and attempt some question papers. In addition, make sure you have all the stationery you need for that particular paper. Lastly, get a good night’s sleep. Burning the midnight oil will do more harm than good in the long run.
