Course Description

This four year semester – based bachelor’s degree in Dental Technology (BDT) is the first of its kind introduced in Malaysia at our premier institute. It is a specialised course designed to coach and fosters the students to work independently and effectively as skilled dental technologists.

The program aims to equip competent dental technologists with strong theoretical and practical knowledge to significantly contribute as a member of the dental health care for planning, designing and fabrication of dental prosthesis that involves construction of be taught in the school of medicine. The technological training will be carried out in the dentures, removable appliances. The basic biomedical sciences within this program will school of dentistry and dental hospital. The students enrolled in dental technology program will be integrated with undergraduate dental students for few course elements to ensure effective teamwork throughout their learning duration and future endeavours.

Curriculum

Year 1

The first year deals with the introduction of basic medical sciences like anatomy and physiology to enhance their knowledge and understanding in dentistry. Students will be introduced to basic dental science disciplines (oral biology, oral physiology, dental laboratory and prosthetic technology). Students will develop the laboratory skills to fabricate complete dentures, removable partial dentures and orthodontic appliances.

Year 2

More detailed study of anatomy, physiology, pathology, oral microbiology, oral biology, dental material and prosthetic technology will be taught. Students will develop the laboratory skills to fabricate cast partial dentures , crown and bridge work, simple occlusal splint construction and orthodontics appliances.

Year 3

Students will be trained with regards to the laboratory aspects of fixed prosthodontics which encompasses crowns and bridges, veneers, inlays & onlays. Students will develop the laboratory skills to fabricate intraoral maxillofacial prosthesis, orthodontic appliances and complex occlusal splints. The principle involved in health promotion and health education is also incorporated in the curriculum with special emphasis on communication, sociology and psychology.

Year 4

Final year emphasizes on the application of knowledge and skills involved in management of complex dental cases like implant supported crown and bridge work, precision attachments and extra-oral maxillofacial prosthesis
