Course Description

In Years 7 to 9, students pursue a range of subjects in which they will improve their academic, creative, social, interpersonal and sporting skills. In each subject, courses are structured to ensure increasing, progressive challenge in preparation for IGCSE courses in Years 10 and 11.

In all subjects, learning frameworks within each unit of work provide sequential assessment activities. After completion of tasks, students are provided with regular and precise formative guidance so that they know how to improve in preparation for subsequent tasks.

At each stage of assessment, students are provided with tasks that will ensure that they reflect upon their work and engage with targets set. Long-term planning within each year and throughout Key Stage 3, allows skills to be revisited, strengthened and developed further.

At SIS, there is a clearly articulated long-term schema for cross-curricular skills progression at Key Stage 3. For example, literacy is valued highly and is given due importance in curriculum plans.
  • In English lessons, students develop literacy skills that will help them to access and interpret texts and produce coherent, organised pieces of writing in all subjects.
  • In Humanities lessons, students develop cognitive abilities and extended essay writing skills.
  • In PSHE, students will develop their abilities to collaborate effectively, negotiate their own viewpoints and provide fluent, focused writing.
  • In Maths and Science lessons, students are consciously taught investigative skills and problem-solving abilities that will assist their learning across the curriculum and at IGCSE.
  • Enrichment activities are planned carefully so that they increase students’ enagagement and so that learning opportunities are maximised.
  • In PE, students are taught skills that will enable them to lead and participate effectively in teams.

Within lessons, activities are sequenced to structure learning. Starter activities are used to bridge the gap between prior learning and new learning. Development activities and investigative tasks are used to demonstrate effective outcomes and to develop thinking skills.

Evaluation exercises are planned in lessons so that students can refine their thinking, consolidate their understanding and prepare for future learning. In Year 9, students will select from the range of subjects offered at IGCSE.

In Year 9, learning activities and assessments will prepare carefully for academic rigour at IGCSE level. Also, at the end of Year 9, students are formally assessed on their abilities in English, Maths and Science in the form of Cambridge Checkpoint exams.
