Course Description

INTRODUCTION

The Faculty Science offers the Foundation in Biosciences programme which feeds into the BSc Honours Plant Biotechnology and Psychology programmes.

The aim of the programme is to provide students with knowledge of fundamental principles in laboratory practice, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and business relevant to biological organisms, and an introduction to handling scientific data.  The course equips students with the appropriate study skills necessary for entrance to the first year of the BSc programme in Plant Biotechnology.  It also helps students to improve their English language competency and adapt to life at university so that they can progress in their chosen course and graduate successfully.

At the foundation programme level, you will be guided by experienced lecturers who will help you to acquire knowledge and learning skills through lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes.

Students who have completed a minimum of 11 years of formal education can apply for the 3 semester programme starting in either April or July.  Students with at least 12 years of formal education may apply for the shorter, 2 semester programme starting in September.  Each semester consists of 10-12 teaching weeks, followed by a period of assessment.  All modules in a chosen programme are compulsory.

DESCRIPTION

The course is structured into four subject areas namely, Biology, Chemistry & Physics, Mathematics & Information Technology and English Language & Study Skills.

In Semester 0, fundamental principles of Laboratory Practice in Biosciences, Physics, Information Technology and Introduction to Mathematical Techniques and Business are studied.  These introductory subjects underpin the basic principles of chemical and biological sciences.

In Semester 1, topics in chemistry and biology are introduced in addition to mathematics.  These include basic biological concepts such as molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms and ecosystems.  Chemical concepts are introduced, focusing upon the biochemical molecules of life.

In Semester 2, modules expand on themes in biology, organic chemistry and mathematics.  Advanced biological topics within the lifecycles of plants and mammals are studied.  Areas such as genetics and genetic engineering are also covered.
