Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) or The Energy University is a private university with Government-Link University (GLU) status, wholly owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). UNITEN operates on two campuses; the main campus is in Putrajaya, and the branch campus is in Bandar Muadzam Shah, Pahang.

Programmes offered by UNITEN are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Courses offered are in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Economics, Energy Economics, Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource, Entrepreneurship and Business.

UNITEN is the first Energy University in Malaysia that aspires to become a globally competitive energy-focused university by embodying the best of Malaysian and Asian university traditions. It is known as a serious player in the academic world with its vision to be a leading global energy university that shapes a sustainable future. This is proven through its top academic excellence achievements.

Over the past years, the world has witnessed the stunning transformation of UNITEN in pursuit of academic excellence, which has improved its reputation. UNITEN has achieved five stars (Excellent) in the Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (SETARA) since 2017. UNITEN has also been granted Self-Accreditation Assessment, which serves as a testament to a reliable quality assurance system in place within UNITEN to systematically review its own academic programmes. Obtaining this Self-Accreditation Status implies the empowerment and trust placed upon UNITEN by MQA to certify its own courses.

The university has improved its standing in university rankings. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings, UNITEN is ranked #144 in 2023. UNITEN has also been recognized for its outstanding achievements in the Engineering and Technology subject, as well as in the Engineering - Electrical and Electronic subject category. UNITEN is ranked #451-500 in Engineering and Technology and #301-350 in the Engineering - Electrical and Electronic category, placing it among some of the most esteemed institutions in the world. In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022, UNITEN is ranked #801-1000 among the world's best universities. In Malaysia, UNITEN is ranked as the 2nd private university and in the Top 10 overall.

Since the establishment of UNITEN in 1997, UNITEN has generated more than 39000 graduates. The fully accredited and recognized academic programmes, coupled with holistic and engaging student activities substantiate that the university is able to produce outstanding and well-rounded graduates. These have enhanced graduates’ employability to 96.8% in 2023. 

UNITEN alumni network spreads over almost 70 countries worldwide and serves at all levels in both technical and management capacity and as academic/researcher.  Some of the graduates are holding high positions in various international companies such as SHELL, Schlumberger, ExxonMobil, EY, Baker Hughes, GE, Petronas, etc. Over the last two decades, more than 1800 international alumni have graduated from UNITEN.

In the academic realm, UNITEN embraces the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach as a seamless companion to its Blended Learning (BL) initiative, fostering active engagement during in-person sessions. Through the integration of BL and Flipped Teaching (FT) methodologies, students are initially exposed to knowledge acquisition and learning guidance via online resources within BRIGHTEN, the university's Learning Management System, before convening in the classroom. Equipped with foundational knowledge, students then partake in PBL activities, encouraging the practical application of their acquired knowledge. Leveraging technology, particularly Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), within the BL approach, enhances and complements the overall PBL experience.

rof. Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman Vice Chancellor, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) Prof. Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman earned his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bradford, UK. He completed his Master's and PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom. He is a biomechanics expert with a keen research interest in human movement measurements, instrument development for forces and joint motion, and orthopaedic implants. Prof. Azuan has broad experience in the higher education sector, joining Universiti Tenaga Nasional and being a Professor of Biomechanics at Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. His exceptional work in this field has earned him numerous accolades, including the BLESMA award from ISPO UK NMS and the prestigious Forchheimer Prize. He was awarded the prestigious 14th National Academic Award in 2022 by the Prime Minister of Malaysia. As Executive Council for the World Council of Biomechanics, Prof Azuan collaborates with industry and academic professionals to promote scientific and technological research and development. He is also a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) and Fellow (FIMechE) with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, UK, Chartered Professional Engineer (C.PEng) and Fellow (FIEAust) with Engineers Australia. Prof. Azuan has published four books, conference proceedings, and over 250 journals.   To this end, Prof Azuan wholeheartedly recognises the importance of teamwork, working closely with communities, industries and scholars. He dedicated a significant amount of time to promote and support scientific and technological research and development that would lead to sustainable development and enhance the quality of life of Malaysian.
