Background of Institution

Established in 1968, The Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII) is now the leading centre of learning and training in Insurance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, Financial Services and Life Insurance Salesmanship.

The MII qualifications are internationally recognised. International designations are also awarded to qualifiers of MII programmes e.g.:

  • MSTI (member of the Society of Insurance Technicians, UK) eligible for those complete Certificate of Insurance Practice (CIP)
  • ACII, Chartered Insurer (UK): Those who attain the AMII are eligible to be elected as Chartered Insurers by the Chartered Insurance Institute (IL) and may use the designation, ACII

Programme Outline

MII offers a progressive educational route for those interested to develop professionally in the field of insurance. The Institute has a comprehensive range of programmes which include the following courses/examinations.

  1. Certificate of Insurance Practice (CIP)
  2. Diploma of The Malaysian Insurance Institute (DMII)
  3. Diploma in Insurance and Risk Management (DIRM)
  4. Diploma in Financial and Actuarial Science (DFAS)
  5. Associateship of The Malaysian Insurance Institute (AMII)
  6. Master of Business Administration (Insurance & Financial Services)

Certificate of Insurance Practice (CIP)
The Certificate of Insurance Practice (CIP) comprises five subjects at three levels - foundation, branch and technical. You can choose subjects which are relevant to your job or which particularly interest you.The examinations are held twice a year. There is a three hour examination for each subject. You will need to study for about four hours a week over six months for each subject you take. You are recommended to take no more than two subjects in one examination session, but you can take more if you wish. It also provides an entry to the Associateship examination with four exemptions.

Diploma of The Malaysian Insurance Institute (DMII)
The MII Diploma aims to provide a strong foundation in insurance with options specializing in general, life, marine and aviation or pension subjects. The Diploma award requires passes in 8 examination subjects. The Diploma holders of MII may seek positions as technical/junior executives in Insurance companies. With the knowledge gained in the Diploma studies, one will understand the operational aspects of insurance, which will lead one to exciting career possibilities. Advancement of careers in insurance companies depends on one's ability to apply to what one has learnt to the challenges in the work place. The Diploma qualification gives advanced standing when one pursues the professional/Associateship qualification.

Diploma in Insurance and Risk Management (DIRM)
Insurance is a sophisticated and challenging financial service which contributes to our economic progress.Risk management professionals often work in the international arena in multinationals and large corporations in various sectors of the economy. They may also work in insurance, broking and reinsurance companies.

Diploma in Financial and Actuarial Sciences (DFAS)
Designed to provide strong fundamental knowledge in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance and Economics for those wishing to pursue internationally recognised professional qualifications and academic courses in Actuarial Science, Investment, Insurance, Business Studies and Financial Services.

Associateship of The Malaysian Insurance Institute (AMII)
Programme is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of the principles and practices of Insurance. The AMII is awarded upon successful passes in 10 subjects, three from the compulsory core module and a further three compulsory subjects, one selected from each of 3 modules: management, technical and specialist. The 4 remaining subjects may be taken from the management, technical and/or specialist modules. A holder of the MII qualification is eligible to apply to the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) for the award of the ACII and the Chartered Insurer Status.The AMII designation gives the holder a professional status which is the key to unlimited career possibilities and opportunities in the field of Insurance. Increasingly as the Industry opens up and becomes integrated with the global market, openings for international assignments are other attractions for the professionals.

Master of Business Administrations (Insurance and Financial Services)
To respond effectively to the rapid developments in the insurance/financial service market both on the local and global front, it is first of all important to develop highly qualified and skilled human resource. The MBA programme is designed to respond to this urgent need.It aims to prepare individuals capable of leading their organizations to face the challenges and complete effectively in the competitive environment of the 21st century.The courses are designed to develop the ability of students to perceive opportunities, to understand complex issues and trends in multi-faceted problems, as well as the contradictory challenges facing the industry that is undergoing fundamental and structural changes. The teaching methodologies are aimed to offer a creative learning environment which nurtures leadership qualities management capabilities and communication skills.The MBA graduates will gain knowledge, techniques and skills in a range of critical areas/subjects such as management, marketing, finance, accounting, economics, decision analysis and in the specialisation subjects offered under the insurance and financial services options.As a centre for insurance education MII also facilitates the following external examinations:

  • The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS)
  • The Associateship of the Institute of Risk Management (IRM)

Facilities

Fully-equipped lecture halls and classrooms, seminar and conference rooms, engineering technology skills training workshops and laboratories, personal computer laboratories, multimedia facilities that include campus-wide Digital Interactive Multimedia Distribution System (DIMDS), an auditorium, a multipurpose hall, health & medical centre, food courts and eateries.

Student Support Services & Student Development Activities
UNITEN provides on campus student apartments and an Executive Education Centre, with standard hotel accommodation. There is also an Olympic-size swimming pool, equestrian and a mini-stadium for football to facilitate various events and activities of students. International students' welfare and special needs are looked after by the International Relations Unit (IRU). The IRU also assists in matters such as admission procedures, pre-arrival information, accommodation arrangements, and counseling advice.

Scholarship & Financial Aid
The majority of UNITEN's students pursuing full-time programmes at the university have obtained scholarship / sponsorship / study loans from various sources, which include Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi (PTPTN), Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA), MARA, Yayasan Tenaga Nasional (YTN), State Foundation and corporate organizations.
