Background of institution

Multimedia University (MMU) was established in 1996 with the aim of producing graduates schooled with the latest developments of IT and Multimedia, and adept with the ability to innovate, contribute and lead in the new millennium era. As the first government approved private University in Malaysia and established by Telekom Malaysia Berhad. MMU plays an important role in providing world-class education within the broad sphere of telecommunications, multimedia, computers, digital art, animation, information technology, software development and management. Its official launch on the 9th July 1999, by former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed signified heavy responsibilities that encompassed the scope of a truly WORLD CLASS institution-to be the catalyst for the development of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and the nation.

Growing to over 20,000 students in 12 short years, MMU has achieved much in a relatively short period of time. The university runs in two campuses, its original campus in the historical city of Malacca and the campus in Cyberjaya. It has produced 22,820 graduates in its time, and a recent survey demonstrates that 93% of these secure employment within 6 months of the completion of studies. It has also grown an outstanding pool of international students numbering at 4,200 from 75 countries. Establishing itself as a major player in research and development, and maintaining excellent ties with the industry through collaborations and research partnerships, MMU now hosts 13 Research Centres to date, focusing in the niche areas of nanotechnology, microsystems, biometrics, virtual reality, microwave and telecommunications, engineering, photonics, advanced robotics, law and business.

Celebrating its 15th year anniversary in 2012, and with a reputation for innovative education, Multimedia University is undisputedly one of the leading universities in Malaysia. MMU offers 114 courses in Engineering, Information Technology, Management, Law, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Finance and Creative Multimedia.

MMU celebrated its 20th year anniversary in the year 2016. In celebrating its 20th anniversary, the university has initiated its MMU3.0 Transformation Plan, or the i-University Plan, for its students to remain relevant in facing the challenges of the 21st century. Furthermore, MMU has secured a spot as one of the top 200 universities in the world for its Electrical and Electronics Engineering (courses) 2015 and 2016 year based on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject. Moreover, The Malaysia Digital Economy Corp recognises MMU as one of the top five universities in the country preferred by ICT companies for its skilled graduates.

Ybhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) , Multimedia University (MMU) Professor Dato’ Dr. Mazliham went to Europe at the age of 19. He attended the Université de Montpellier 2 – Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc, in Montpellier, France. There, he earned his diploma in 1989, his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Electronics, Electrotechniques and Automation in 1991, his Master of Science in Electronics, Electrotechniques and Automation in 1992, and his Post Master Degree in Electronics in 1993. In 2008, he earned his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the Université de La Rochelle, France, accomplishing the Very Honourable Class of achievement. He began his career with a one-year-plus stint as an engineer with SGS Thompson Microelectronics, before joining the Malaysia France Institute in 1996 as the Deputy Head of Department (Electrical Equipment and Installation). In 2013, he was appointed the President and CEO of Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL). In recognition of his outstanding leadership and capabilities, he was selected to lead MMU as President and CEO, effective August 2020. He has served on numerous postgraduate examination committees, as well as supervised PhD and Masters students in the area of Artificial Intelligence, especially in Machine Learning and Deep Learning with different application areas such as Medical Image Processing for early detection of Brain Tumour and Breast Cancer, Remote Sensing techniques in Smart Agriculture, Green IoT, improving efficiency in Power Grid, efficient load balancing in Software Defined Network, etc. Apart from that, he also worked on Data Filtering and Data Classification and has lead research teams based in Malaysia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Pakistan, UAE, France and Saudi Arabia. His various research groups have published more than 100 research articles in Scopus-indexed journals, book chapters and well reputed conferences.
